WHY VOLUNTEER

Because it takes not just one but all of us to make Signal Hill School the best there is for our kids

Because it takes many creative minds, skillful hands and big hearts to make each event a whopping success

Because it's REWARDING, plain and simple.

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER

SHPFA volunteer is anyone within the Signal Hill School community - a teacher, staff, parents, grandparents, adult siblings, aunts, and uncles. Because it is our duty as members of our school community to be aware of how we can support, protect and keep our children in a safe environment, all volunteers, whether you help out in the Library or School Store, are a Room Parent, are on the Board, or volunteer in any way at the school, are required by the School District to view and complete the sign-off sheet for the CHILD ABUSE training video.

WHAT CAN I VOLUNTEER FOR

HOW DO I SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER

It is so easy to sign up. We have sign up sheets on Back to School night. Stop by the SHPFA table, say hi, chat with us, and sign up to as many events you like. You'll get an email from the committee chair of an event you signed up for as the event gets closer.

Those parents who like to lead, watch for teacher and SHPFA emails, Mrs Linda Hummel's E-Newsletter, our News and Events webpage, SHPFA Facebook page for announcements of open leadership positions. Here are positions you can volunteeer for:

1. SHPFA Board Member

   a. President/Co President

   b. 1st Vice President - School Spirit, Community Values and Education

   c. 2nd Vice President - Fundraising

   d. 3rd Vice President - Social Committee

   e. Secretary

   f. Treasurer/Co Treasurers

   g. Liaisons

To learn more about duties and responsiblities of a specific SHPFA Board Member position, please go to our EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER'S page. You can also visit our SHPFA ByLaws page.

2. Committe Chair for Fundraising and other events

Your responsibility is to contact your team of volunteers using the volunteer sign up sheets, acknowledging their participation and giving them an estimated time of when you will be contacting them to start organizing the event.

Send reminders before the event to your volunteers of their responsibilities to ensure good participation.

Maintain good communication with Board Members. Getting updates let us know how things are progressing. You can either send us an email or attend our Executive Board Meetings. Please check our Executive Board Members page for contact info list.

If you are short on volunteers, email our Board Secretary, Jenn Kover at Jenniferkover@me.com

ahead of time so she can send a blast email and have Mrs Hummel do the same thing through her E Newsletter about the need for volunteers. She'll also be posting it on our FB page and webpage.

Publicity is key to get people to our events. Communicate with our Board Secretary for help getting the message out.

This year, we are requiring Committee Chairs to come up with a budget for their event and have it approved by the Board. Exceptions are for fundraising events that do not have upfront costs like Square1 Art,

Boxtops4Education and Celebrity Scoop Rita's Water Ice. Try to stay within budget and if it looks like it might be difficult, talk to us before you spend the money. Refer to Treasurer's Corner page on how to go about check requests and/or reimbursements.

After your event, send a thank you note to your volunteers for a job well done.

Turn over all the information you have gathered while planning your event such as vendor contact info, contracts if any, event budget, expenses and earnings so we can pass them on to the next chair.

Keep your eyes open for good leaders for next year and let us know. We need more leaders like you!

3. Room Parents and SHPFA Representative

Two Room Parents and one SHPFA representative are chosen in each class by grade level teachers through lottery of names of parents who indicated interest in such positions in classroom volunteer opportunity form sent home during the beginning of school year.
